I just also did a Haskell version (72 lines), though it has very poor error handling. Maybe I can clean it up some and post it here. I don't know how much time I spent but it was more than 2 hours. I'm still at the stage of doing quite a bit of refactoring and head scratching as I write even simple Haskell code.
Ok, you have officially renewed my interest in Haskell. The idea of "beautiful code" is definitely in the eye of the beholder and makes for some interesting discussions. In my youth I loved small elegant pieces of code full of cleverness. Then I switched and was focused more on finished code that did exactly and only what the client needed. Now I am battling with how to make elegant simple code that is exactly and only what was needed ... but still looks beautiful.
